Portsmouth Football Club Announces £90 Million Residential Development.

Largest Building Project In Portsmouth.

Portsmouth Football Club has today announced a £90 million mainly residential development to be known as Pompey Village.

The new development will be built on the site of the existing car park to the west of the Ty Europe Stand, a brown field site which used to be the old Fratton Goods Yard. The development is another step forward in the total regeneration of Portsmouth Football Club and comprises a new residential complex of studios, apartments and penthouses. Together with the new stadium it will be the largest building project in the City since the construction of Gunwharf Quays commenced in 1998.

The net revenue generated from the new development will go towards the costs of construction of the new stadium.

Pompey Village will have something for everyone and will become a landmark development in the City of Portsmouth. With five modern tower blocks, the tallest of which will be 17 storeys high, the accommodation will range from one bedroom studio starter homes to 3 bedroom penthouses, and lots more in between, giving an overall total of 523 units. Views of the Solent, the Isle of Wight and the city of Portsmouth from the upper floors of the apartment blocks will be spectacular.

Apart from housing, the club has asked the designers, Fareham based HGP Architects, to include a doctor‚s surgery, a pharmacy, a 6,500 sq. ft. sports hall with splash pool, sauna, jacuzzi and squash court, offices for home working and a high quality convenience store.

As part of the second phase of the stadium construction, restaurants and bars will also be built behind the enlarged Ty stand, giving much needed food and beverage facilities for fans, residents of Pompey Village, and the people of Portsmouth. There will also be a multi-storey car park with 372 spaces, 150 of which will be for residents of Pompey Village and 222 for Portsmouth Football Club.

The whole site will be tastefully landscaped and will totally transform an area of Portsmouth which has been sadly neglected for many years. With the new road structure of Fratton Way leading into Rodney Road and then to the Eastern Road, links to the M27, A27 and A3M are excellent for the new Pompey Village.

The club intends to submit a planning application for this new development to Portsmouth City Council very shortly. If planning permission is granted, construction could start in the spring of 2004.

Commenting on the new Pompey Village, Chairman Milan Mandaric said: -

"I would like to express my sincere thanks to the local council, Architect Headly Greentree and to the entire team who have worked so tirelessly on this project.

We wanted to create a development that was modern, stylish and impressive to complement the new stadium and I believe that is exactly what we have achieved.

The Pompey village will stand out as a distinctive piece of architecture and will be another milestone in the regeneration of Portsmouth.

Pompey Village will be something of which I, and all the people of Portsmouth, can be justly proud.

It is constructed with the community in mind and all the different needs that cater for one so tight knit.

The euphoria of our promotion to the Premier League did not stop with our immediate fans but had a direct impact on the community as a whole.

Pompey Village will have the same impact and everyone will benefit in the wider community.

But for our wonderful football fans we are creating a magnificent stadium accompanied by a lovely development that will be eye catching and thoroughly modern.

They will come to look at the stadium and all that encompasses it with exactly the same pride currently reserved for supporting the team.

Pompey Village, coupled with our new stadium, will firmly put both feet of Portsmouth FC into the 21st century to stay.

And the wonderful concept behind Pompey Village means that the club will be able to stand self sufficiently on those two feet without in later years being crushed under a burden that cripples it.

It is the making of Portsmouth Football Club, not only for tomorrow or the next five years but for the next century and beyond.

I am very proud to be the Chairman of this football club in the here and now but even prouder to be able to deliver this future development to our wonderful fans and the community as a whole.

I would like to think that this is my trade for the wonderful honour a magnificent community bestowed upon me in their freedom of the city award."
